Route Taken: behind library, across toby creek rd
Opinions: My previous rating was primarily based upon the trails on the research/construction side of campus which are not very good trails. Yesterday I rode some trails behind the library and across toby creek rd which are tough to find but better trails than I previously commented on. These trails could certainly be turned into something good with proper care and maintenance.

Route Taken: started behind library, then across the recreational fields to the other side with the "blue blazes"
Opinions: Most confusing trail I have ridden in the area. Which is OK because I personally don't mind a little exploration and adventure. However it was pretty frustrating at times and the trails are VERY muddy even though there hasn't been much rain recently. Lots of sticks, roots, etc and the general flow of the trail wasn't exactly wonderful.

Route Taken: I live near the trails here and have been exploring with the purpose of putting together one solid ride. My goal is to map all of the trails that are left and provide a nice looking map using GIS. I'm not quite there yet. One of the problems is that whenever the trails were completed they kept adding small routes and "social" trails. I'm trying to come up with one solid loop that is ridable while hitting most of the highlights. Keep in mind that there are numerous separate loops. One south of Toby Creek road, one north and one north of the new research campus (includes sections up by campus police). Feel free to e-mail me if you want a tour of the trails.
Opinions: I love riding out here. The north-most stuff is wide-open and fast while the south stuff is tight and techy.

Opinions: There is has been a ton of construction, so several trail options were blocked. Nothing was clearly marked and its mostly very wide, gravel trail. Seemed to be mostly walkways for students then actual mountain biking trails.

Route Taken: North Trails currently by parking lot 25
Opinions: These ones are small and easy to manage. They use the north trails for class, ROTC, access to the greenway, as well as access to surrounding apartments. I have been marking the trails, as well as clearing them now and then. http://www.trailguru.com/ui/user/tracks/Bjanssen

Opinions: Credit Union loop has several fallen trees and the new bank took out a good section of the trail, avoid this section and take the library loop instead.

Route Taken: We parked at the Hollywood Video and rode across the street.
Opinions: The trail is all right but there were a lot of dead ends and not really a whole lot of trail to ride. There were a few places where the trail would start to get good and then it would end or switchback to the place you started. We enjoyed riding around the school more than anything. So far the best places I have been are the white water park and the place off of Albermarle road.

Route Taken: Started behind hospital, took every trail I saw.
Opinions: Good challenging singletrack ride. Can be very confusing as construction is everywhere obliterating parts of trails. I had to turn around 2 or 3 times and re-trace my route due to trail ending in a construction site. Still, I really enjoyed what is left (Except for the roots).

Opinions: I just moved here from Florida and really look forward to getting into peak riding shape. These trails were a little muddy because of the rains this week but well kept and extremely fun. Switchbacks with roots made the climbs technical. Security asked me to move my vehicle from the hospital parking lot so be sure to park at the library or as close as possible.

Route Taken: Leave from the library parking lot and choose a direction. One way is more decent and the other is more climbing. Something there for everyone. Fast singletrack, lots of roots, natural drops, man-made structures, log rides, steep climbs or decents depending on the direction you ride. GREAT trail!!!
Opinions: My new favorite trail

Route Taken: Below the Hospital
Opinions: Yes the trails are open. I followed the advice of parking at Hollywood video. Don't do that. Park in the far corner of the Hospital. The trails are fun with some steep short climbs. It's a bit hard to go fast because it's tight and twisty. Trails are marked but confusing for the unfamiliar. I rode lots of stuff 2-3 times because I couldn't tell where the heck I was going. It was fun enough that I didn't mind.

Opinions: Ate a little dirt. Nice downhill. Singletrack trails and gravel road. Hasn't been ridden in awhile so I cleared all the cob webs with my face. You can thank me later. Nice challenging single track that may be a little too much for a novice rider but you can vary your speed to meet your comfort level.

Opinions: I think they are a lot of fun, but they seem to be tearing a lot of them down since last week. Everyone better get out there while they are still there. Also, where is the library loop? How do I get on it?

Route Taken: Hospital Loop
Opinions: Very nice! There are some nice speed runs, tight spots (keep your elbows inside), and some mean uphill climbs right after the steeps through the creeks. Great drainage with some good technical spots. A few downed trees blocking the trail. The "new trail" needs some breaking in. Saw a 6-7ft cottonmouth mocassin on the trail by the pond basking in the sun. I'll be back for this ride.

Route Taken: Parked at Library. Rode Library loop and Baseball loop.
Opinions: I haven't riden this trail in a good two months, and things were a lot different today. Heavy machinery has thrashed the Baseball loop. Trees have been cleared and large portions of the trail ruined to make room for college buildings. Library loop still rocks, but stay away from the Baseball.

Route Taken: Library Loop - entered the trail head and followed the loop to the right.
Opinions: It was rainy all day so the trail was extra slippery, adding to what would normally be a fairly difficult trail. This loop does not have as many roots as Beech Springs and therefore was more enjoyable. There were two good creek crossings and several log jumps, plus a neat place overlooking Toby Creek Road. All in all, it was an enjoyable ride! I'll go back soon to try out the other loops. I was told that a portion of the Credit Union Loop has been eliminated due to the construction of the Chancellor's House; no idea of when or if it will be rerouted. For a map of the trails, go to http://www.uncc.edu/mtbike and click on "Campus Trails."

Route Taken: Followed the library loop to the Credit Union loop to the baseball loop.
Opinions: This is a fantastic trail and I'm glad that it's close by. This was the first time that I rode the Credit Union loop and it was a lot of fun. The gravity cavity like section was pretty challenging when it is filled with leaves, but that makes it interesting. It has some technical spots that are fun to try. A few more roots that Poplar Tent, but a little longer too. I'll definitely ride it again.
